Spectacular Pieris!

April 2nd, 2018

A member of the heather family Pieris originated from the forested mountain regions of China, Japan and Taiwan, often called ‘Lily-of-the-Valley’ shrub.  Pieris are an evergreen, easy to grow, showy spring shrub, which put on a spectacular display of white or pink bell-shaped flowers and colourful new growth which ranges from pale pink to dark burgundy. Great in the ground or in a container this is a plant I would never be without in my garden.

I can recommend Pieris japonica ‘Forest Flame’ which has new growth which colours bright red in spring, fading to pink and finally green with many long white flowers in the spring. Also among my favourites are Pieris japonica ‘Passion’, ‘Katsura’ ‘Mountain Fire’ and not forgetting ‘Little Heath’.  Pieris provide colour from March to May.

Pieris grow to various sizes so check the size of the variety to make sure it is suitable for your planting location.  Pieris are fully hardy but be warned, the young red growth can be damaged by frost so best planted in a sheltered position in semi shade. Plant alongside Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Camellias as they all enjoy the same conditions.

An important point to mention is that Pieris like well drained but moisture retentive acid soil so require Ericaceous compost and feed.
